The questions continue. In Hannah’s maddening rush to understand things
I must admit that some of her questions glide by me so quickly that they often can
be difficult to truly appreciate. Now and then though one question lands right in
the middle of where I am at the moment then rolls around in my thoughts resting
there until I can give it more time and energy.
Recently, Hannah and I were talking while riding in the car. On this particular ride, Hannah asked me to look at a cloud in the distance. She remarked how it looked like a cow. Then, with a bit of a laugh, she asked, “How funny is that?"

I
don’t recall being able to look at the cow-cloud thing that she saw since I was
accelerating down a street at a rate of speed unsafe for me to remove my eyes
to gaze up into the wild blue yonder. Still, her question stuck with me making
me realize how Hannah is often finding humor in many ordinary things.
Hannah,
as you grow I hope you embrace humor for all the good things it brings to a
healthy life. I hope one day you come to a clear blue sky realization how you just
love to laugh. I hope you discover how laughter can be medicine for a bad day. I
hope you find it is a needle and thread weaving you in closer to people. I hope
you see how it can be an icebreaker that cools off a tense situation. As you
grow up and grow older, you likely will find that laughter is a necessary part
of remaining sane, settled and safe in the world where we live. Some claim a
good cry is in order every now and then, and maybe you will find that true in
your life, but I hope you come to the realization that laughing uncontrollably
for five minutes is a pretty good thing now and then, too.
I hope you recognize and cling to people who your make you crack up in laughter. I
hope you see how laughter can be part of being happy from day-to-day. I hope
you learn to not only laugh at life’s absurdities but that you are able to make
others laugh along with you. There is hardly a better feeling than when you
realize you made someone else happy by making them laugh.
As
with so many other things though, laughter is tricky. There are easy ways to
make people laugh. You can make fun of someone’s physical characteristics and in so doing get some chuckles from some people. Most anyone can do that if they
try. Be above that though, real humor isn’t about making fun of someone’s
physical appearance or circumstance, doing that comes from the part of a heart
that lives to be mean and rude. Here is your golden rule of humor: make the joke about yourself and if you find you can't laugh at it when you are the butt of the joke then understand it's not going to wear well on or with others if you make them the butt of the joke instead of yourself. And now the second golden rule of humor: if you
can make the joke about yourself then go no further than that and make the joke
about yourself. When others realize you are capable and willing to make fun of
yourself before you would dare do that to others you will find they will see
you as someone they had much rather have as a friend and confidant than as
someone who would treat them as a continuous punchline to your jokes.
So,
Hannah, here’s hoping your life is filled with laughter. And here’s to hoping
you can make people laugh with you along the way. Finding those people make the
journey more fun. Live life with enough humor so that when you are not around
your friends can say, “She always makes me laugh.” Live life laughing enough so
that any wrinkles that show on your face over time can be described by your
loved ones as laugh lines.
What
better way to end an article about laughter and being funny than with a few
jokes. So, here we go...
Two
fish are in a tank. One turns to the other and says, “How do you drive this
thing?"
Okay,
okay, recently a bunch of books fell on my head, I’m not blaming anybody
because I only have my shelf to blame.
You
want to hear a pizza joke? Ah, never mind, it’s pretty cheesy.
Hey
folks, I’m here all week. Don’t forget to tip your waitress and please drive
safely!
(Drops
microphone, walks away.)
